Indonesian inspiration

We have travelled to Indonesia this week, to the island of Lombok, where we have been learning about homes and lifestyles as part of our 'One World Week'.

Because Andrew lived there, he was able to tell us all about it (with a little help from his mum!) They showed us how their house could fit into our classroom - and there wasn't an upstairs. We are all sitting in the reception room in the picture above.

The pictures below show the bedrooms and the bathroom. The children's jumpers are cusions that you sit on in the living room. But where is the kitchen? You'll have to ask Andrew if you want the answer!

We have enjoyed making some jewellery and batik pictures this week.

During this week we remembered about the devestation caused by the tsunami when we listened to some stories about this terrible natural disaster. We learned how brave people have been and how much some have lost.

Grotesque Gargoyles!

In Fairytale Land the castles and palaces are protected by some gargoyles. In olden days these used to be called grotesques. We needed to replace some damaged ones, so set to work at making new ones. What do you think so far?

When Mrs Giant contacted us about something terrible happened, we were only too glad to help. Unfortunately, their beloved golden goose had been stolen and when Mr Giant chased he scallywag who stole it, he ended up falling down a beanstalk and being badly injured!

When we interviewed Jack, he admitted that he had stolen the goose because he was poor. He also told us that he had made up things to make Mr Giant look like a bad person. Apparently it was not true that the giant said things like 'FEE, FI, FO, FUM I smell the blood of an Englishman.'

Equally, it is untrue that the giant has ever ground any bones to make his bread - he is in fact a vegetarian!

F.A.B. did of course publish the true version of events, which helped resolve a tricky situation.

When FAB received a letter from a distressed Mr Wolf, they were only too happy to help. People (and pigs) have been picketing Mr Wolf's den for a long time now and he's feeling very fed up with it.

It would seem that the poor old wolf had been doing grandma a favour and teaching the spoilt Red Riding Hood a lesson. Grandma was fed up with Red Riding Hood being rude to her, so asked the wolf to give her a fright. Unfortunately it all backfired ...

Look out in the future - Miss Blackburn says she's going to write some story books about F.A.B.

Our percussion band has been practising hard ready for our perfomance on busking day. This is our version of Arriba, which we started on last week. Mrs Taylor is conducting, but will play her trumpet next time.

We wouldn't normally be dressed like this, but it is book week and we all came to school as our favourite character.

Swift Air

Swift Air were very excited to announce their new service this week- flights from Norwich International Airport. The team worked hard to make sure that customers would be aware of the ten new destinations from Norwich - mostly capital cities in Europe. They calculated flight times and travel costs, before putting together some hotel and car hire deals.

Our first customers have benefitted from the special offers on flights and when we spoke to them they were very happy with the service they received.

Our Percussion Band

Mrs Capron found out about a wonderful lady called Mrs Taylor, who comes to school to teach us music and help us to create a percussion band.

We have been working in groups and trying different tuned and untuned instruments to see which ones we can play the best.

We have found that we can play many different rhythms and we are learning that instruments need to be chosen carefully for the sound you want to make.

At the moment we are learning to play the metalaphone and glockenspiels. Some of us already play instruments like the flute, violin, recorders and bass guitars. We are going to practise and find out what we are good at, so that we can show off our percussion band on busking day.

Trying out the instruments is fun! Don't forget to come and see us play in the summer!

Our company- Photo Art - was approached by a French restaurant owner to create some pieces of work for his new restaurant in London. He wanted Hockney to do this, but as he was unable to complete the work in time for the grand opening he asked us, knowing that we are a reputable company.

Our client was very pleased with our work and purchased them all!

Design Technology

We worked very hard on our banner, designing our squares before making patterns, then cutting out the pieces from felt. After sewing the parts onto our square, we had help from Mrs Williamson and her sewing machine to put all the pieces together. We are proud of our banner, which was made during our time at S*T*A*R*S.
